The Binghamton City School District is seeking candidates to fill an Alternative Education Coordinator position for the 2024-2025 school year with an effective start date on or about September 2, 2024. These are full-time, probationary tenure-track positions.

Job Qualifications

Job Goal:  To facilitate, monitor, and support students’ success and achievement in alternative education settings, with an emphasis on effective transition plans and graduation progress tracking.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (master’s degree preferred) in early childhood, elementary education, secondary education, special education, school psychology or a closely related field
  • Minimum of three years experience teaching regular or special education
  • Knowledge of research and best practices related to alternative education and Restorative Practices
  • Understanding of scientifically based research surrounding effective interventions, instructional strategies, and behavioral supports for students in alternative education settings
  • Teacher leadership experience, strong organizational skills, and effective communication abilities to coach and support teachers and instructional teams

Functions, Duties, Responsibilities:

  • In-District Alternative Education Programing
    • 40% or more classroom teaching that involves modeling and co-teaching around best instructional practices related to the direct support of alternative students attending Patriot Academy.
    • Coordinate with Director of Pupil Services, building administrators, guidance department chair, and guidance counselors to manage student intake for Patriot Academy.
    • Work collaboratively with content area teachers daily, including modeling best instructional practices related to the direct support of alternative students attending Patriot Academy.
    • Drive the ongoing development of the Patriot Academy Program, including design, implementation, and evaluation of the program to ensure it meets student needs and district standards.
    • Create, maintain, and update program informational documents for distribution to families and students
    • Coordinate overall professional development for Patriot Academy Teachers
    • Collaborate to build and support a culture of inclusivity, equity, and support, where all students feel valued and are provided with the resources and opportunities to succeed academically and social-emotionally
    • Seek out additional funding sources to support the mission, goals, and development of in district alternative education programs.
  • Facilitate and support the creation of transition plans for students in alternative education settings
    • Course needs, credit count, behavior supports and interventions, attendance records
  • Collaborate with administrators and student support teams using a Restorative Practices approach as the framework for re-entry conferences related to student transition plans.
  • Serve as an active point of contact for families and students involved in BOCES alternative education placements, Patriot Academy, and GED/Adult learning centers.
    • Maintain running records of contact, needs, interventions, and outcomes.
  • Attend quarterly Alternative Education meetings with BOCES counterparts regarding BCSD student academics, behavior, and attendance.
  • Fulfill assigned and additional duties as guided by the Director of Pupil Services

Success in the role of Alternative Education Coordinator is measured through the following metrics:

  1. Student Outcomes:
    • Improvement in academic performance, behavior, and attendance of students in alternative education settings (e.g., Patriot Academy, BOCES, GED/Adult learning centers).
    • Successful transitions of students between traditional and alternative education settings.
    • Reduction in disciplinary incidents and suspensions, facilitated through the use of Restorative Practices and Positive Behavior Supports and Interventions.
  2. Teacher Development and Support:
    • Effective delivery of professional development programs, as evidenced by teacher feedback, improved instructional practices, and student engagement.
    • Increased teacher confidence in supporting alternative students through supported implementation of best practices.
  3. Growth and Improvement:
    • Identification and securing of additional funding sources to expand and enhance alternative education programs.
    • Implementation and effectiveness of transition plans for students moving between educational settings.
  4. Collaboration and Communication:
    • Strong working relationships with administrators, teachers, community partners, and external partners, reflected in positive feedback and successful coordination of services.
    • Timely communication and support for students and staff involved in alternative education placements.
  5. Overall Impact:
    • Increased student retention and graduation rates among students in alternative education programs.
    • Achievement of measurable goals set by the Director of Pupil Services and district leadership.
