Job Description

Title: Dean of Students

Reports to: Building Principal/ Assistant to the Superintendent

Qualification: SBL/SAS

Job Goal: To assist the building level principal in the direction and coordination of prescribed instructional activities and programs. To provide leadership that will ensure the accomplishment of established goals, effective use of facilities and materials, and in general promote the overall welfare of students in their educational environment.

Position is will primarily entail working with Alternative Education students. Time will be split between PATS, Patriot Academy and Alternative Education students.

 

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Shares with the principal the responsibility for protecting the health and welfare of students.
  • Assists the principal with the supervision and coordination of instructional programs.
  • Promotes an effective learning climate in the school.
  • Assists in the supervision of the school's teaching/learning process.
  • Attends special events held to recognize student achievement where appropriate.
  • Keeps abreast of trends, developments and research as they pertain to education and school operation by attending professional meetings, reading professional journals and other publications.
  • Completes APPR responsibilities assigned by Assistant Superintendent for Instruction/Building Principal.
  • Counsels individual students, and when necessary, makes appropriate referrals.

  • Makes recommendations for appropriate revisions of policies and rules.
  • Assists and coordinates with the building principal the general discipline of the building.
  • Resolves discipline problems in a fair, consistent, and just manner, and maintains records of any disciplinary action taken.
  • Confers and communicates with parents, teachers, counselors, support service personnel, and students on the matter of discipline and welfare.
  • Assists in the interpretation of school and district programs, polices, and procedures to students, parents, staff, and community.
  • Develops knowledge of and rapport with outside agencies as they relate to student needs.
  • Coordinates and directs faculty supervisors and student activities/behaviors during the lunch period.
  • Reviews data and track discipline, attendance, and academic progress for alternative site students.
  • Participates and engages in Professional Learning Communities.
  • Coordinate home visits or outreach for truant students and work with families to remove barriers to attendance.
  • Create and provide professional development or coaching.
  • Participate in team meetings and help align alternative site practices with the larger District mission.
  • Support reentry planning and creates intervention plans for students who waive the superintendent hearing process and for students returning from suspensions, placements, or hospitalization.
  • Performs ancillary duties as directed by the appropriate administrator.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Strong ability to perceive, comprehend, relate to, and respond to the needs of all areas of the student population.
  • Flexibility and creativity in problem solving.
  • Knowledge of school discipline codes, Board policies and Education law.
  • Knowledge of effective disciplinary techniques.

 

Terms of Employment: Ten-month school year.

Evaluation: Annual performance evaluation will be conducted by a Cabinet member, as directed by the Superintendent.
