Job Description

The Binghamton City School District is seeking candidates to fill the Building and Grounds Maintenance Helper position for the 2025-2026 school year with an immediate effective start date.

The work involves the performance of simple tasks in the maintenance and care of buildings, grounds, building equipment, and facilities. The incumbent usually assists journey-level mechanics on more difficult or complex building maintenance procedures. The work is generally performed under the direct supervision of journey-level mechanics, although the simpler and more routine tasks are performed independently. Does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities

  • Performs general building maintenance and grounds keeping tasks, including mopping floors, cleaning walls, and cutting grass.
  • Assists in the performance of minor painting, carpentry, and electrical work, such as replacing light bulbs, ballasts in fluorescent light fixtures, and fixing or replacing electric switches and outlets.
  • Removes snow from properties using a shovel or a snow blower.
  • Maintains ground by using lawn mowers, hedge trimmers, rakes, shovels, etc.
  • Performs minor plumbing tasks such as repairing toilets and replacing faucets and faucet washers.

  • Working knowledge of building maintenance techniques.
  • Working knowledge of rough carpentry and simple plumbing techniques.
  • Skill at making simple electrical repairs.
  • Skill in replacing or repairing plumbing fixtures, rough painting techniques, and replacing window glass.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools effectively
  • Willingness to acquire more skilled building and mechanical skills and methods.
  • Ability to understand and carry out both written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in emergencies, patience, and tact.
  • Willingness to work outdoors under adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and utilize common office software programs, including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases, at an acceptable rate of accuracy and speed.
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Job Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Six (6) months of experience in building maintenance activities, which will involve assisting in or performing several building maintenance and repair activities such as carpentry, electrical, cleaning, and groundskeeping.
